Dealing With Being Injured - Part 2 - Acceptance
So, the initial shock is over. You've been in and out of hospital, the grade A painkillers have worn off and you're starting to get into a routine. You've spent the past few days answering phone calls as the news slowly drips through your various social circles, family/friends and social media. You're inundated with get well soon and best wishes. I AM GRATEFUL FOR EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! The dust finally starts to settle and reality begins to set in.
The mind is a funny thing and it's only when your left in a position to have no choice but to be aware of it , do you truly get an appreciation for it. The title of this instalment is 'Acceptance' , why? Because there are a lot of things you now have to accept. Granted, a lot of these are transient and won't last for long but you still have to go through the process.
In a matter of moments , the way you go about your daily life is flipped. Those things you take for granted are now the things that are the most difficult. Here's a non-exhaustive list of the things that I once could do autonomously but now require help for (as embarrassing as it might be):
It's a strange feeling.
- Lying down.
- Sitting up.
- Opening/closing bottles.
- Stirring.
- Getting dressed.
- Washing myself.
- Picking stuff up off the floor.
- Hugging people.
- Blowing my nose.
- Making yourself comfortable.
It's a strange feeling.
Mildly degrading, I won't lie. It's funny how in the initial stages of getting injured that we think so differently. All our thoughts are on the major things we can't do (mainly the sport/exercise we're involved in) and we forget the small stuff. And that's what this is about, acceptance.
Acceptance of the position that I'm in.
Acceptance of the fact that I'm not able to do those things myself right now.
Acceptance of the help that's offered to me that I need regardless of how it makes me feel.
This next one is the most important one.
Acceptance that this is necessary RIGHT NOW but won't always be the case if you approach the recovery process correctly..
