S&C for Runners Limerick: Breaking the Sub-16 BarrierBen was already a serious runner with a respectable 5K time of 16:09. But he had hit the classic "Runner's Dilemma." He knew that to break the 16-minute barrier, he needed to increase his mileage and intensity. But he also knew that at his level, making significant jumps in training volume usually results in one thing: Breakdown. THE REALITY: THE FEAR OF BREAKING DOWNEvery endurance athlete knows the anxiety of walking the tightrope between peak fitness and injury. Ben admitted that he felt his body was simply "unlikely to maintain the load" required to get to the next level. He wanted to push, but he knew that without a stronger body, increasing his mileage would just lead to injuries that would force him back to square one. Ben had tried doing Strength & Conditioning (S&C) himself in the past. It didn't work. Why? It lacked accountability. Because he viewed S&C as just "supplementary," it was always the first thing to fall by the wayside the moment he felt fatigue from running. He didn't need a PDF plan; he needed a coach to ensure the work actually got done when he was tired. THE ATLAS HIGH PERFORMANCE SOLUTIONWe provided the structure and management he was missing.
THE OUTCOMEThe S&C allowed Ben's body to absorb a significant training block without injury. The result?
THE NEXT STEPWith the 16-minute barrier broken, the sights are now set on a Sub-15 minute 5K and chasing team medals in Cross Country this winter. If you are a runner who breaks down every time you try to ramp up your mileage, stop running yourself into the ground. Build the engine first. We are currently booking assessments for new athletes 👇
